Get Involved

There are a variety of ways that an individual can get involved. We understand that not everyone has the ability for each of these actions. But any step you take has the potential to improve the public education system for all of our children and youth.

If you want to become or stay informed of the issues:

  • Subscribe to updates of this website. There are two links on the right hand side of this page, depending on your preferred method. Choose email, unless you have a dedicated RSS reader.
  • Like our Facebook page. You can see the box on the right hand side of this page. This is where we collect media mentions that include any Calgary Board of Education issues. Then ask your friends to like our Facebook page.
  • On Twitter, follow the #yyCBE hashtag. You can see an example of how this works on our Twitter page.

If you want to inform your representatives of your issue:

  • Contact your trustee. You can phone them or email them about your issue and let them know how you would like them to represent you. They can’t stand for you if they don’t know what’s important to you.
  • Write a letter to the editor of the Calgary Herald, Calgary Metro, or Calgary Sun. You must provide your full name, address and daytime phone number. Due to space limitations, letters of 250 words or less are preferred. Ideally, a letter to the editor is in response to a prior letter or to an article that recently appeared in the paper.
  • Contact your MLA. Public education falls under the provincial jurisdiction. Find out how your MLA feels about public education and about the role of local democracy as it is exercised through trustees and school councils. Inform your MLA of your position on your issues. This can be done through a polite letter (most effective) or email, or a petition signed by a number of supporters (less effective). You can also phone or visit the constituency office, although you should schedule in advance.

If you want to effect change within your own school, try talking with your child’s teacher, meeting the principal and attending a school council meeting or talking with a member of school council. You should be able to find contact information on your school’s website or by visiting the school office.

If you want to cooperate with us, please contact us through our volunteer form. It includes ideas of ways to coordinate our efforts.

  • Contact us with a message of support or with suggestions, advice or the questions that affect you.
  • Write a guest post for our blogContact us first, to ensure that the subject is appropriate. We are starting to hear stories where our elected trustees have lacked transparency or accountability. If you can present the facts in about 500 words, we may be able to publish it here.
  • Please consider making a donation. You can find the Donate button at the top right of this page. You can donate using any credit card or a PayPal account, and you can choose any amount you wish. We use the funds to record and post video of the board meetings, make access to information requests, and maintain the website. Because we are not considered a charity, we cannot issue a receipt for tax purposes.
